Primary Years Program

The Primary Years Program is designed around a child centered, trans-disciplinary curriculum. It builds upon each child's individual strengths, developing deep understanding of important concepts and acquiring and practicing essential skills, while encouraging positive attitudes and actions toward the people around them and the environment.

The curriculum is guided by a Program of Inquiry consisting of inquiry for each grade level, derived from six fundamental questions. The questions lead the children into an exploration of knowledge that has both local and global significance. The Program of Inquiry has been developed by the teachers at Lincoln Community School to include study in each of the individual disciplines. The strands taught in each subject are defined in the Scope and Sequence documents for language, math, social studies, music, art, IT, P.E. and French.

From the children's first year in school they are encouraged to be in charge of their learning. Integral with each unit of inquiry are questions asked by the children. Through exploration and investigation, the children develop the skills to conduct research, empowering them with the tools to understand their world.

Our students take an active part in assessing what they have learned. They reflect upon what they learned, the skills they used, their accomplishments, and the ways they can improve. Methods of assessment by the teachers reflect individual development. Conferences between the teachers and parents are student-led to enable the students to include their parents in their own reflection of their progress.

As well as recognizing the importance of concepts, knowledge, and skills, the PYP places great importance on the development of positive attitudes toward people, the environment, and learning. This is achieved through the children identifying and modeling elements of the Learner Profile. Our aim then is to nurture and develop globally minded children who are:
  • inquirers
  • thinkers
  • communicators
  • risk-takers
  • knowledgeable
  • principled
  • caring
  • open-minded
  • well-balanced and
  • reflective
