Student
Life offerings in the elementary school are grounded on the belief that
children need to be exposed to a variety of age appropriate engagements,
outside of the regular school day, in order to support their social and
emotional growth. The program allows the students to have access to local area
resources and expertise.
Afterschool Activities Students
can select at least two different activities each week in a three-module
rotation throughout the year.Each
module contains a variety of activities from which students and parents can
choose from, including but not limited to African drumming, soccer, drama, choir, swimming,
basketball, basket weaving, bread and pastry making, recycled art, Spanish, and
karate.
The Arts
Drama:
Interested
students can audition and participate in school productions organized by the
Drama department.During the
present school year, many ES students will be performing in the play The Short
Tree and the Bird That Could Not Sing.
Music:
The
elementary school has a budding instrumental music program aimed at developing
instrumental music skills in our fifth grade classes.Students in grade five who do not wish to participate in the
instrumental class may enroll in the choral component of the program. The ES
Band and Choir perform at assemblies, and concerts in the first and second
semesters.
LCS
has a thriving Music Academy that offers the talent of many local musicians to
guide students in further developing their musical skills via private lessons
offered on Saturday mornings.
IB Learners in Action Through
carefully planned and executed field trips, students are exposed to local area
experiences that may spur students to reflect on possible actions they can take
to further extend their learning. Each grade level participates in at least two
local field trips a year. The field
trips are directly connected to units of inquiry being pursued at each grade
level and provide opportunities for students to further deepen their
understanding of the key concepts in those units.
The
fifth grade classes engage in an overnight trip at the end of the year to Mount
Afadjato, the highest mountain in Ghana, where students participate in team
building activities led by our counselor and grade five team.
Athletics At least twice during the
school year, our grade 3-5 swim team and soccer teams have the opportunity to
demonstrate their sportsmanship and physical prowess in a competitive setting.
Clubs
Student Council: Three year ago, from a
direct connection to one of the grade five units of inquiry on government, the
elementary school student council was born. The Student Executive Council is formed of six officers
elected at the beginning of each school year by their peers in grades 3-5.Each grade 1-5 selects a class
representative who attends the weekly meetings of the Executive.
Environmental Club: A year ago a
group of students leader in grade four formed the group The Penguin and Polar
Bear Club, an organization aimed at developing awareness of the issues faced by
certain animal species who are under constant threat. During the 09-10 school
year, the founding members of that group have rename it as the LCS
Environmental Club.The group
meets once a week to discuss ways to reach the wider community as they strive
to raise awareness of the environmental issues Accra faces.
