Middle Years Program (MYP) Personal Project Exhibition
On February 12, 2020, tenth grade students of Lincoln Community School
proudly shared an amazing collection of Personal Projects with the community
from 9:00am - 11:00am in the High School library and nearby classrooms.
Led by Personal Project Coordinator and Humanities Teacher Ms. Amber
Rhinehart, students showed how they have developed as Lincoln Learners,
embodying the IB Learner Profile attributes and employing the Approaches
to Learning (ATL) skills. Here are a few examples of the challenging goals
they created for themselves:
Jad: How can I construct an electric buggy which is eco-friendly and meets
the standards of an Internal Combustion engine in order to test my engineering
skills using renewable energy?
Noga: How can I create a short documentary for high-school students at Lincoln Community school in order to effectively raise awareness and empathy towards
dementia as a sickness and the effect of dementia family relationships?
Mathieu: How can I design a 3-D model using a program for an eco-friendly
open-air house for the hills of Ghana in order to reduce carbon footprint and
be energy efficient?
Jisoo: How can I break the stereotype Asians and Africans have towards each
other by creating a YouTube channel containing educational but entertaining
videos?
Derek: How can I create a podcast on some of my family members' personal
stories combined with Ghana's Independence in order to inform other family
members of our own history?
Paula: How can I create an entertaining comic about cognitive dissonance and
people's actions connected to global warming for interested expats in Ghana
in order to inform them about their own disconnect?
Selim: How can I produce a business plan that showcases the expenses of
building and running a go-kart track in Izmir, Turkey?
Noora: How can I create and fund a prototype for a tool-kit that supports
highschool-aged youth, 15-20 years, in Ghana, who have no previous
business education, on how to plan a potential business?
Raphael: How can I create one level of an action video game that provides
information about media censorship and its impacts on society in a fun and
interesting way, so that anybody could have fun learning while playing
the game?
Parents, teachers, administrators, and students from elementary school,
middle school, and high school visited the exhibition. Tenth grade students
shared their work with visual displays, actual products, oral presentations,
and made themselves available to answer questions. Four student-made films
were shown in a room dedicated to this media for the first time at our school.
The tenth grade parent group kindly prepared and served a celebratory meal
for students, parents, and teachers after the event.
The culminating learning activity of the Middle Years Program, the aims of
the Personal Project are to encourage and enable students to:
• participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry within a global context
• generate creative new insights and develop deeper understandings through
in-depth investigation
• demonstrate the skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a
project over an extended period of time
• communicate effectively in a variety of situations
• demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of, learning
• appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments.
Students will receive official IB MYP Course Certificates for successful completion
of the Personal Project and Service Action at the beginning of their eleventh grade
year, which will be added to their education portfolios. The MYP Personal Project
includes a 3500-word report and the opportunity to work with a supervisor, both
useful experiences before the DP Extended Essay that students will begin next
year.
